Introduction by 'The Magic Lampoon'

We play a lot of free-for-all multiplayer Magic. One of the issues in free-for-all is, whom are you going to attack? Sometimes the same patterns start to repeat themselves.

We were thinking, what if we played a Magic variant that forced players to ally with one another or turn against one another? To that end, we’ve been playing Throne Magic, a Magic variant we invented. In Throne Magic, each player receives a role card telling him or her whom they must attack. The role cards are secret, putting players in the position of not knowing whom to believe. Throne Magic is based somewhat off of Mafia, invented by Dimitry Davidoff in 1986. If you’ve played the card game Bang!, it will be familiar to you.

Also, we have to admit that we were somewhat influenced by “Game of Thrones.”

Throne Magic should be played with at least five people, and we have tested it with as many as 10. If there are three or four players the Role Card can be used to play secret, or random, Two-Headed Giant. This allows for the rest of the rules such as Seasons, Holdings an Thrones to be used regardless of the Roles being less relevant.
